Background During the past five years, the Department of Children & Family Studies has made sustained efforts to establish collaborative relationships with U.S. and Latin American universities and research centers in areas related to the social, cultural, and mental well-being of Latino and Latin American children, youth, families, and communities. These efforts have translated into several activities and initiatives, including the establishment in 2001 of the Matilda Garcia Initiative for Latino Research and Exchange, a fund with the purpose of promoting research and exchange with Latin America on issues around children, families and communities.
