Background

During the past five years, the Department of Children & Family Studies has made sustained efforts to establish collaborative relationships with U.S. and Latin American universities and research centers in areas related to the social, cultural, and mental well-being of Latino and Latin American children, youth, families, and communities. These efforts have translated into several activities and initiatives, including the establishment in 2001 of the Matilda Garcia Initiative for Latino Research and Exchange, a fund with the purpose of promoting research and exchange with Latin America on issues around children, families and communities. Other efforts have included:

Since 1999, the Latin American Track at the Annual Research Conference "A System of Care for Children's Mental Health"
Symposia and lectures with Latin American scholars

Seminars taught at Latin America universities

Research projects and publications on Latino and Latin American subject matters

The CFS exchange and collaborative research efforts have fostered the examination of social issues of relevance for the understanding of the Latino experience in the United States. Likewise, these efforts have raised awareness among U.S. researchers of critical aspects facing children and families of Latin American descent.

Our Goals

To foster collaboration in applied research between Latin American/Caribbean and North American universities, research centres, and practitioners, on issues related to children, families, and communities.

To promote the exchange of speciliazed knowledge and experience related to U.S. Latino and Latin American/Caribbean children, families, and communities.
To make resources available to the researchers on issues related to U.S. Latino and Latin American/Caribbean children, families, and communities.

Our Stategies

To establish a network of North American and Latin American applied researcher institutions working on issues related to children and families from a comprehensive perspective.

To collect and diseminate information and resources, including policy briefs, funding sources, bibliographic resources, and descriptive and analytical data about U.S. Latino and Latin American/Caribbean children, families, and communities.

To promote, organize, and implement courses, seminars, workshops, colloquia, and conferences in the general area of U.S. Latino and Latin American/Caribbean children, families, and communities.
